1. Caenorhabditis elegans (the famous model genetic organism) has 6 different chromosomes: 5 autosomes (called I-V) and 1 sex chromosome (called X). That is, n=6 for hermaprhodites (which are basically XX females that make both sperm and eggs). Hermaphrodites can either self-fertilize or they can be fertilized by males (which only have one X chromosome per diploid cell; i.e. males are hemizygous and designated “XO”, where the “O” just represents no chromosome, “nullo”). How many chromatids per nucleus (in a diploid somatic cell) will there be in a hermaphrodite of C. elegans at prophase of mitosis? A. 6 B. 11 C. 12 D. 22 E. 24 2. How many chromatids per diploid nucleus (in a diploid somatic cell) will there be at telophase of mitosis in C. elegans male cells? (Hint: a cell in telophase contains two separate nuclei.) A. 6 B. 11 C. 12 D. 22 E. 24 3. During meiosis I of spermatogenesis in C. elegans males, what arrangement will be found at the metaphase plate? (Reminder: a tetrad is a complex of four chromatids; a dyad is a complex of two chromatids.) A. The autosomes will form tetrads and the X will exist as a dyad. B. All chromosomes will form tetrads. C. The autosomes will form tetrads, and the X and O will pair as a tetrad. D. No tetrads will form in this case because males are hemizygous. E. The autosomes will form dyads and the X will form a tetrad.

Please proofread (i.e. correct grammar, suggestions on a better vocabulary, and other general suggestions) my analytical exposition about the marginalisation of the noughts by the Crosses in the novel “noughts and crosses” . Please help me to make it an A standard as it is currently sitting on a B. Thank you very much. I really appreciate your help. The marginalisation of the noughts by the Crosses The novel, noughts and Crosses, by Malorie Blackman talks about a society that is divided into two groups, noughts and Crosses, based on a racial line. In that society, it follows the lives and experiences of two lovers, Callum and Sephy. Callum being a nought and Sephy a Cross. In the novel, the noughts are marginalised and discriminated against by the predominant group, the Crosses, in areas of standard of living, education, media and law as well as language. The marginalisation of the noughts is perfectly illustrated in differences relating to the standard of living. Housing is a key point of difference; the noughts (the MacGregor’s) live in houses with “fifth- hand threadbare nylon carpet and [the living room’s] seventh-hand cloth sofa.” (p. 34) While the Crosses exemplified by the Hadley’s live in houses of “seven bedrooms and five reception rooms for four people.” (p. 30). In addition, the noughts have limited employment opportunities. This is clearly shown by Callum when he reflects back on his future, “No Cross would ever employ me for more than the most mundane; menial job, so why bother?” (p. 80). Furthermore, the disadvantages that the noughts experience in other areas such as public transport also reinforces their marginalisation. For instance, during Callum’s train journey with Sephy, a guard says, “How dare a nought sit in first class? It’s outrageous. It’s a scandal. It’s disgusting…” (p.112). In conclusion, these dissimilarities between the noughts and Crosses quite evidently portray the inequality in areas regarding housing, employment and transport services. Furthermore, they are also shown in education. Education is another point, used by the Crosses, to marginalise the noughts The noughts have limited access to education resources such as schools which are mainly run by the Crosses. This is well shown when Callum blames the Crosses for his study deterioration when he states, “Until a few years ago, [noughts] were only allowed to be educated up to the age of fourteen” (p. 25). Even when the noughts were allowed after a new law was made, less than two dozen of them entered Cross schools nationwide. (p. 46). Moreover, the ones who succeeded to schools were abused in there and were constantly picked upon (p. 141). This mistreatment is shown when Callum says, “As long as the schools are run by Crosses, we’ll always be treated as second-best nothings” (p. 37). All of this substantial evidence demonstrates the marginalisation of Crosses to the noughts through limiting their access to education and maltreating them. Marginalisation also continues in areas of Media and Law. Media and law are other highly powerful tools used by the Crosses to disempower the noughts and emphasizes the importance of the Crosses in the society. The media serve to influence the public’s general view on the noughts by constantly accusing them for the illegal acts in the country. For instance, during their conversation with Sephy, Sephy’s friends state,” [Crosses] see [noughts] every other day. Everyone know they all belong to the liberation Militia and all they do is cause trouble and commit crimes and stuff like that …” (p. 86). Law is also used by the Crosses’ favour to further marginalise the noughts. For example, Ryan MacGregor did not have a fair investigation. This is clearly shown when the investigators force Ryan to confess that he is the Dundale bomber by threatening his family as stated by Ryan, ” Those bastards! They said they had him. They said Jude was as good as hanged……… I signed a confession admitting to all the charges”. (p. 243 – 244) Also, later in the novel, the random and unexpected questions asked by the judge in the court attempted to drag Callum into a trap. This is clearly shown when Kelani Adams protested, “I object, Your Honour. Callum MacGregoris not on trial here.” (p. 268) The mentioned evidence explicitly show how media and law are used by the Crosses to marginalise the noughts. Other areas in which marginalization takes place include language. The language used throughout this novel has a significant impact on how the noughts are marginalised by the Crosses and how their status is portrayed in the society. For example, the word “noughts” has negative connotations as Callum describes it, “Noughts…..Nothing. Nil. Zero. Nonentities.” (p. 81). Besides that the word “noughts” starts with a lowercase “n” indicating that it is not even a proper noun unlike the word “Crosses” which starts with a capital “C”. Also throughout the novel, the noughts are referred to as “blankers” by the Crosses. This is clearly shown when Sephy’s friend, Lola, describes them, “[noughts] are blank by name and blank by nature.” (p. 87) Crosses, however, are referred to as “daggers” which depict a weapon that is capable of scratching and severing others, reducing and disconnecting them, or even bringing them to an end completely. This just reveal the feelings that the noughts have toward the Crosses and reflect how much they are marginalized by the Crosses. Ultimately, the connotations carried by the language use such as words and nicknames all help to marginalises the noughts and position them in an inferior social status. To conclude, this novel explicitly shows that the noughts are marginalised by the dominant group, the Crosses, in areas of standard of living, education, media and law as well as language.
